Varitek Chose to Exercise His Option to Stay With Boston Red Sox
In the end, the catcher Jason Varitek chose to exercise his option to stay with Boston Red Sox. It was actually a $3 million option, however it meant that he will still be with the team as a backup to Victor Martinez instead of becoming a free agent.
Varitek was in hesitation prior to Wednesday, when he decided to stay with the team. Boston actually refused to exercise its $5 million club option days before Wednesday and so the catcher was given two days to decide whether or not he will accept to just exercise his player option lower than $5 million.
The catcher has been rendering his services to the team for nine seasons through 2008. Last season, he was the regular however Boston was able to have Martinez in the team and so he became a backup to the former member of Cleveland Indians.
Way back in 1997, Varitek hit .259 with 175 homers and 705 RBIs however he slumped the past two seasons, with .220 in 2008 and .209 this year. And also for this year, he only threw out 10 of 118 runners trying to steal, this is according to STATS LLC.
But not bad, Varitek holds the record with Red Sox of 1,381 games as a catcher. And in most of the games, he exerted great effort, done his part.
It seems like, Varitek is still interested about being a part of Red Sox, and to continue being a determined catcher despite all the troubles. That is why he opted to exercise his option to stay with the team though at a lower price.
As of now, Varitek is most likely more into being a part of a good team than be a free agent. He might have realized some things. He will be good.
