Two-Year Contract Between Cubs and Grabow Close to Being Sealed

John GrabowYes, a two-year contract between the Cubs and John Grabow is now close to being sealed. A key player is anticipated to be secured in the bullpen.

One of five free agents on the Cubs, Grabow, is about to finalize his deal Thursday. The deal is actually for free agency on the 12th day of 15-day period.

The Cubs acquired the left-handed Grabow from Pittsburgh on July 30 together with Tom Gorzelanny. He already appeared in 30 games, thus posting 3.24 ERA. But what’s even more notable is he set a career high in appearances in 2009, successfully pitching in 75 games overall. Not to mention that he also held left-handed hitters to a .222 average.

Grabow can really be considered an important player, thus Cubs should try to keep him in any way possible. They should not make a decision similar to what they have done before, the one with Ken Gregg.

Kevin Gregg had the closer’s job then. But in August, Carlos Marmol took if from him. It was actually unexpected, he was resigned by the Cubs. But still he wants to be a closer.

Chicago started the 2009 season with only having Marmol to the bullpen just right from the past season. At this point, the Cubs can pick from as bridges to Grabow and Marmol, including David Patton, Esmailin Caridad, Aaron Heilman, Sean Marshall, Angel Guzman, Justin Berg, and Jeff Stevens. Others like James Russell, John Gaub, and Blake Parker who pitched in the Arizona Fall League can also be in for a look this season of spring.

Even in the world of baseball, people just come and go. But then, for every person’s departure, there is a reason for it. Fate has something in store for everyone, it has the reason.
