The Yankees Finally Agreed to Terms on a One-Year Contract With Sergio Mitre

Sergio MitreYes, the Yankees finally agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Sergio Mitre. Baseball fans can most likely remember when the top baseball team declined having the right-hander in a contract worth $1.25 million. The Yankees definitely want to get the player on a lesser deal.

Now under a one-year contract, Mitre, of course with the consent of the Yankees, will get a base salary of $850, 000 with possible performance incentives. Though it is now widely confirmed, the Yankees actually did not immediately announced the contract being finally settled.

The 28-year-old player was 3-3 with a 6.79 ERA in 12 games. And he got nine starts out of these games in 2009, of course just for the Yankees. July of last year, he went through Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery but returned to the big leagues pretty good.

The general manager of the Yankees, Brian Cashman, indeed confirms that Mitre will enter Spring Training in competition for role as fifth starter just alongside the likes of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Chad Gaudin. He will also audition for a long relief slot.

In case Mitre will not make the team out of the said Spring Training, he will need to clear waivers to just be in the Minor Leagues. However, he will surely be attractive to other clubs considering his contract and potential upside.

Mitre was able to pitch in parts of six Major League season with teams such as the Cubs, Marlins and Yankees. He actually managed to play in 90 games with 13-26 and 5.56 ERA.

Mitre is now a part of the Yankees. He is a good addition to the top baseball team. Most likely, he will be contributing to the future success of the Yankees that is surely even bigger.
