Have the Rules Changed in Regards to Under Age Gambling?

Underage gambling has been and continues to be a problem in all casinos in real life and online.  In the United States, the age for one to legally gamble is 21 in casinos.  In casinos owned by American Indians, it can range from 18 to 21.

In Atlantic City, security guards could boot out any underage gamblers they found, but now they can pull aside suspected gamblers that seem to be underage and detain them until the police come to arrest them.

The youth have been a big problem in the 11 casinos in Atlantic City.    Statistics show that in 2008 there were 403 underage persons detained for under age gambling. There is no telling just how many got back in with no real deterrent.

There are hefty fines for the casinos if they allow youth under 21 to gamble.  Just in November of 2008, the state commission fined one Atlantic City casino $157,500 for just one case of under age gambling.  Allowing security to detain underage gamblers in Atlantic City may take care of the problem little better and other casinos may take note and follow suit.

In Iowa, a new fine is in place if an under 21 gambler is found, and the gambler has to pay it.  This went into force on July 1, 2009 and the fine is a monstrous $500.  In Iowa, casinos can be fined up to $20,000 if a minor is gambling in their establishment.  Casino workers are trying to check ID’s of anyone looking to be under 30 but with all the technology of making fake ID’s look real, authorities are hoping that this fine for the perpetrator will detour under age gamblers.

A new law going into force on July 26, 2009 in Washington State will make minors gambling in card rooms liable for a fine of $125.  They will also have to do four hours of service in their community and will have to give up anything they won.  Dealers can be fined up to $300 if they are found to having a minor at their table.  The commission in this state conducts regular inspections for under age gamblers and last year there was a compliance rate of 78%.   In this state, you must be over 18 to gamble.

In Pennsylvania, police can only hand out trespass summons to those underage persons gambling in casinos.  In March 2009, the board in that state disciplined employees and even terminated one of them for allowing underage gamblers to participate at their tables.

Online gambling is another thing.  It’s really hard to discern if a gambler is under age or not.  Many online gambling establishments try to make sure gamblers are over 21 but it is better if the youth’s family is involved.  There are many different programs to put on the computer to prevent youth from being able to access betting and gambling sites.  Until something better comes along, finding out if a gambler is of age will continue to be a problem.
