Exploration of Sport Betting
Sport betting refers to any activity involving the prediction of sports results and risking a sum of money, or rather stake, on the outcome of the future event.
Sport betting has been around for years now. Betting was an old tradition in England and thus colonists carried this interest of theirs across the ocean to the United States. In 1800’s, colonists used to wager on sports like horse racing and cock fighting. During early years of the 20th century, boxing and baseball gained much popularity on the betting scenario. In mid years of 20th century, football and basketball attracted much public attention and gave a tough competition to baseball as most sought after betting activities.
Sport betting is legal in some nations while strictly prohibited in others. For instance, in US sports gambling schemes are allowed to operate in the states of Nevada and Delaware. However, in other states it has been made illegal by the provisions of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.
There are predominantly two reasons for which people indulge in sport betting:
- Some people consider it as an investment and thus mean to increase their wealth.
- Others are just sport lovers and place bets to increase the level of excitement regarding the outcome of the game.
Betting can take a number of forms namely straight, parlays, proposition bets and teasers. Straight betting is most usual and simple form of betting where there are two playing teams.
Individuals who placed bet on the team that wins takes away the betting stake. Parlays offer a better opportunity to win greater sum but the risk is higher. In this kind of betting, a person bets on a number of plays of an event. If all those teams win, the person takes away the bet.
Betting can be carried out through a person called a bookmaker or a bookie. To balance the number of wagers on both the sides, the bookmaker makes sure that everyone does not place bets on favorites.
Generally two strategies are used:
- Money Lines
- Point spreads
Money Lines: In this strategy. the parties placing wager on the favorite team need to invest more to gain less in case of a win while the party placing wager on the underdog has to invest less to gain more.
For instance, let us consider two teams: A and B
A: +130
B: -140
+ Sign indicates underdogs and – sign indicates favorites.
Now, so as to place a bet on underdog A, a person needs to invest $100 to gain $130.Whereas a person betting on favorite B has to invest $140 to gain $100.
Point Spreads: In point spreads, the bookmaker initially advertises a spread of certain points in a certain game. If a person bets on underdogs he takes away those points initially and wins if his total points i.e. (points assigned initially + points gained by the underdog) are greater than the points scored by favorite. The points are assigned in form of fractions so as to avoid ties.
It is pretty evident that sport betting has far reaching consequences. It tends to threaten the integrity and credibility of professional sports. Moreover, due to greater indulgence of youth in betting on amateur sports it can result in addictive behavior and thus criminal tendencies.
